Mrs. Holmes does a fantastic job simplifying this book and making it easy to read. The idea that dust is a basic building block for everything is unheard of. It is hard to imagine any facet of dust that Hannah Holmes didn't cover in this book in remarkably vivid details. She explains how we all carry dust- in some way. It might be skin cells and hair bits, but mostly dust is mostly composed of the unknowns.Holmes goes back to the Big Bang, which we know scattered matter all over, and created the universe. The grains of dust would group together to form places for atoms to meet and make molecules. Which created the Sun, Earth, and…. all of us.
Holmes later on goes on to talk about how dust pays little attention to ANYTHING that we as humans do. What we consider national boundaries has no concern to dust. Countries that run on coal for electricity, and diesel for transportation, have a lot of dust. One in fourteen deaths in China, are due to deadly dusts (pollutants). Crops in China also are dying out because pollutants make it so they get as much sun as they are used to. It was only recently that we discovered that the problem dusts of Asia are our problem, too.
Throughout the book, Holmes discusses different ‘hot’ topics such as global warming, and the Asthma epidemic in the United States and Europe in recent decades. Holmes debates weather or not dust is the cause. We all know of the deadly dusts that contain asbestos and the deadly effecst of dust getting into the lungs is explained how we can and cannot get rid of various substances, explaining how people die from so many different diseases caused by inhaling the wrong kind of dust. It’s a little scary. Dust is everywhere. Dust is everything.

Makes you think about all of the things you are breathing into your body on a daily basis and what havoc or benefit these things may have for you. It is a very interesting book and made me a bit of a clean freak, of course, cleaning doesn't do too much good and seems only to cause all of the dust particles to dislodge for me to inhale. But, what can you do? I highly recommend the book.
This is one of the best books I have ever read. I read Secret life of Dust the first time at the library 8 years ago and when I found out that Had the book, I immediately ordered it. I find it to be a fact filled books. that gives us a tremendous lot of information on dust. Thank you for carrying this book. I highly recommend this book.
I liked the book. It certainly covered everything I would like to know about dust. The references at the end were appreciated. Interestingly, there were no pictures, drawings or figures; however, an appendix contained links to many web sites on related topics of each chapter. This is good, but it would be even better if the links could be found either on the author's web site (I don't know that she has one) or the publisher's (Wiley) web site. Despite these references, I would like to have seen a few figures, drawings or photos.
I'm getting through it...it is a good book-just very detailed. Lots to ponder. The kind that does well on a road trip!
This is an excellent book! Being more interested in the natural sciences, I found it a bit dull at the end when Holmes delved into human health. The first half more than compensated though. She has an excellent style of writing and really got to know her subject for this work.
Most things we run across in life - books, movies, art - are simply variations of each other. This book is something truly unique unto itself, breaking new ground and propelling the reader into strange new worlds of thought, from the infinite to the infinitesimal, from the omnipresent to the unnoticeable. You haven't read anything like it.
Stretching the mind to conceive things that it has never even occurred to us to consider, it leads us on a strange and wondrous journey through time and space, through events cataclysmic and mundane. Better buy two copies, because friends who stop by will suddenly find themselves "borrowing" it, only to have it "borrowed" away in turn by others. In that way, this book is a bit incendiary in nature as it has a power to ignite the curiosity of anyone who comes into contact with it.
