This is the seventh book in the Ralph Chalmers mystery series. Once more Thurbin provides a gripping mystery that is expertly researched, cleverly crafted and topical. Ralph, aided by Katie and four friends from the University sail Gypsy Lady from Bideford to the ports of Oporto and Lisbon on the Iberian Peninsula, then on to Gibraltar. While enjoying the ambiance of the 1920’s Rock Hotel and exploring the historic military fortress they become entangled in a smuggling ring from Morocco and the European Union process of decommissioning caches of arms held by the Basque Nationalists. Ralph finds himself torn between a desire to help British Intelligence and his quest after a quiet life while changes to the hierarchy at the University threaten to distract him from his duty to Queen and Country. Our daring duo enjoy the high life at the famous horse-racing meeting at Goodwood and Ralph manages to compete in a Tin Man competition in Milan where he receives an offer that he finds hard to refuse. With his usual panache, Ralph helps to flush out the villain in a twist to the ending that will both intrigue and delight the reader.

Pleasant reading without any really high points and with a good deal that is simply a novel about a middle aged professor as unwilling as his lady love to commit to marriage. No real romance for the readers who count on that element in the mysteries and no real suspense or vigorous action such as are required by a large number of readers. Suspense and action are there, but in a calm 'academic' manner which engenders little suspense as to the outcome. On the other hand, the heroes friends are companionable, the segments on academic life seemingly accurate, the travel component moderately interesting and the style, while a bit awkward, is literate and clear. All in all, a good book to fill the time for those not requiring excitement or other reflections of intensified emotions. As are others in the series which I have read, I would call it a companionable book sharing experiences with a friend who has an inclination toward daring when out of the classroom.Product details

Loved this series. One of my criteria in reading fiction is I must learn something while being entertained. This happens in each book. Gimme more!
Enjoyable story - especially curled up by the fire with a nice cup of tea - what better way to spend a winter's evening! But then I enjoy everything I have read, so far, by P. J. Thurbin Count myself very lucky to have stumbled across his books on .
More like a short story. He was a gripping plot but still was an enjoyable read if you have been following the professor through his other adventures
It was a good read with plenty of twists, but it got off to a slow start with a long dissertation on the history of the area. Sadly, I am not into history, so for me it was much like reading a text. But once the action got started, all that changed.
Now that I have read a half dozen novels by this author I can say that books are almost the same, same characters, same setting, slightly different plot but in the end a middle age Professor overwhelms the local police and Scotland Yard to solve the murders with hardly a scratch.....but with help from his significant other, Katie! Light reading without getting excited or depressed....Will read more of the line!
