Learning to Fly A Novel edition by April Henry Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I saw this author's post on a Kindle forum, recently, and was hooked before I was even finished reading the sample. I finished the book in just two reading "sessions" this weekend.

While I have read stories with similar plots, and while some people may not find the suspense to be as gripping or "edge of your seat" in comparison with some thrillers out there (it's all so relative), I thought the story was very well thought out, interesting without being overly complex or containing an abundance of "filler," and not at all lacking in tension, suspense, or drama. The pacing was terrific and the writing was consistent, logical, and plausible. The character development is good and gives the reader insight into egos, anxieties, and motivations. I always wanted to know how the author was going to have this all play out, and felt compelled to keep turning the pages and not stop until I got to the end.

I highly recommend this book and think most will enjoy rooting for Free, just as I did, and will not want to put the book down until it's finished.

Free Meeker, a nineteen-year-old free spirit and soon to be an unwed mother is involved in a fatal pile up on a highway blinded by a dust storm. She survives but a fellow passenger, a hitchhiker, named Lydia, is killed. Lydia was running away from an abusive relationship with her husband. After finding a gym bag filled with drug money, Free decides to assume Lydia's identity and run away to start a new life for herself and her, as yet, unborn child. Of course, life is never so simple. Looking for Lydia is her enraged husband and Don Cannon, a drug dealer who desperately needs the money that Free has found or he will, himself, be killed.
April Henry has written a stand-alone novel with the subtext of "a thriller", Actually, LEARNING TO FLY should be more properly called a novel of suspense. April's novel is character driven while most true thrillers would be considered plot driven. The difference, as I see it, between the two is that the pacing would be much more rapid with the plot driven thrillers. The character driven thrillers must, by definition, move slower to allow the reader the time to get to know the character. April succeeds in creating an interesting yet sympathetic figure in Free Meeker. There are some character motivations that were not completely explained such as why a young policeman would be interested in an unwed pregnant woman. Otherwise, LEARNING TO FLY is a well-written novel that should appeal to readers on the beach or in the air. Personally, I would like to see a bit of a tighter plot but this one certainly succeeds as is.
Stopped reading when I got to a very inappropriate section (6%) into the kindle format. I teach Middle Schoolers and I would never, never have them read the book. Up to the 6% point it was good .....
Please keep writing! Very enjoyable and I am looking for more! She knows her subjects, making the story very good reading.
If you are a fan of Henry's cozies, this is not quite the right book for you - but it does have a happy (kinda, sorta) ending. The writing is crisp, vivid, and effective. Oregon actually experienced the kind of dust-storm disaster so horrifically described in the opening. All of the characters are a little larger than life, which is why they are so memorable, including the City of Portland. I remember this book, enjoyed it a lot and hope you do too.
This was a great premise for a story. Young girl, raised by hippies, gets a chance to reinvent herself after being involved in a freak car accident and finds a quarter of million dollars. Sounds good, right? It could have been. I liked the characters and I liked the pace until the author tried to throw the entire story together in the last 30 or so pages and then completely dropped the ball with the ending. Was the author on deadline or something because this ending just blew the entire book in my opinion.

Save your money and check it out at the library.
Plot/Storyline 3 1/2 Stars

This novel was Sleeping with the Enemy coupled with something along the lines of The Sopranos. It was a fairly quick read with only a few filler areas. At one point while reading, I thought there would be a romantic side plot. However, it wasn't explored very deeply.

The story was told from three different viewpoints Free's, a drug Kingpin, and an abusive husband of Lydia, the dead woman whose identity has been taken over by Free. All three views were interesting in their own way. However, Ms. Henry makes use of one suspense building style that I have never really respected. At a critical point, she attempted to surprise the reader by avoiding the viewpoint of the character that orchestrated the surprise moment, instead telling the action from Freefs view. This works on one level; however, on a different level, it left me feeling as though I missed something, asking questions like, "But, how did he get there?" Even though it is explained, the moments of wondering caused an interruption of concentration.

I found the ending to be somewhat gPollyanna-ishh and unrealistic.

Character Development 4 1/4 Stars

I had trouble rooting for Free. She just didn't seem like a very deserving person of her windfall. I felt more pity for the real Lydia than I did for Free and found myself wishing more than once that Lydia had been the one to survive the accident. However, Ms. Henry still did a pretty good job developing Free as a character.

The other two characters who told their sides of the story were very well drawn. Both were interesting in different ways. The abusive husband was like watching a train wreck; you could see the crash coming, but couldnft tear your eyes away. The drug dealer illicited feelings of sympathy, while being torn between that and disgust at his profession.

Writing Style 5 STars

The sentence structure flowed evenly throughout the novel. I enjoyed the descriptions and the slow build up of suspense. The action scenes were handled clearly and succinctly. The dialogue was realistic with good voices.

Editing/Formatting 3 1/4 Stars

There were quite a few editing errors throughout this book. Most prevalent were missing words, but there were also wrong words used and a couple of misspellings.

The formatting was of professional quality.

Rating PG-14 for Semi-Graphic Violence, Spousal Abuse, and Drug Use
